Mathieu Deiss has now taken the torch from his iconic father, Jean-Michel, at Domaine Marcel Deiss. At the same time, however, Mathieu is pursuing another much acclaimed project at a 7-hectare vineyard inherited from his maternal grandfather. He has christened this property Vignoble du Rêveur (“Vineyard of the Dreamer”) as an homage to his grandfather, who was known for his poetic vision and free spirit. By so doing, Matthieu is also giving free rein to his own aspirations to innovate and push the creative boundaries of winemaking, while staying true to his grandfather’s legacy.

Vignoble du Rêveur spans 7 hectares in Bennwihr, Alsace, and features a variety of grapes including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. The parcels are situated on young Quaternary alluvial soils, which contribute to the unique character and complexity of the wines produced. The terroir of Vignoble du Rêveur is characterized by Quaternary alluvial soils, which impart a distinct minerality and freshness, and express the unique geological and climatic conditions of Bennwihr.

Matthieu Deiss is committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, reflecting his dedication to sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices. The entire estate is certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter. These practices include minimal intervention, promoting biodiversity, and enhancing the natural health of the vineyard ecosystem. Cover crops and natural composts are used to maintain soil fertility, and all vineyard work, from pruning to harvesting, is carried out by hand to ensure the utmost care and quality. The vineyards are likewise co-planted in the same manner as Marcel Deiss, and the wines are all made in the Marcel Deiss winery.

In the cellar, vinification includes skin maceration and ambient yeast fermentation, often in amphoras, to preserve the purity and expressiveness of the fruit. No sulphur dioxide (SO2) is added during vinification, which allows for the natural flavors and characteristics of the grapes to shine through. The wines are aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks, foudres, and amphoras, which helps develop their complexity and depth while maintaining their freshness and vibrancy.

BOTTLING: Light filtration. Minimum sulfur addition at bottling.

AGING: Aged for 3 months in clay amphora.
